Treatment for Insomnia

You know sleep is important to your health and wellbeing, and you struggle to get enough sleep.

It could be that:

  • You’ve always been a light sleeper.

  • Your mind is active, especially at night.

  • Your thoughts start racing as soon as you get into bed.

Or maybe you haven’t slept well since:

  • Things got really stressful at work.

  • You got sick.

  • You had a huge fight with a close friend.

You might notice that:

  • You started napping during the day or drinking more caffeine to stay awake.

  • You’ve started avoiding activities you used to enjoy because you are so tired.

  • It’s been months since you were able to fall asleep or stay asleep.

You may have tried so many things to sleep. Perhaps you’ve taken supplements, or purchased blackout curtains, or stopped using screens altogether. Perhaps you’ve heard about Sleep Hygiene, and you’ve created the perfect bedtime ritual, and you still can’t sleep.

You are not alone! And there are evidence-based treatments that can improve your sleep.

What is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBTi)?

CBTi is the gold standard for treating insomnia. I will work with you to explore behavioral changes that can help you to sleep more.  We’ll also look at how your thoughts might be getting in the way of sleep.

My approach to CBTi is influenced by Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. CBTi can require changes that are difficult to make.  We’ll explore your values and practice mindfulness of difficult thoughts and feelings. We’ll dive in to your willingness to sleep – this can require acceptance of the moments when you are unable to sleep.

As a naturopathic physician, I am always thinking about how physical health conditions or medications may impact your sleep, and will collaborate with your healthcare team to support you in your health goals.  I may also recommend additional modalities that can support sleep, including botanical medicines and natural supplements, craniosacral therapy, hydrotherapy (using hot and cold water), and medications.
